Between politics and Covid, it’s been 10 years of the social contract being fractured to pieces. A chasm opened up between people who did not want to see or name harm and those that did. Our loneliness is the abyss between. One side is hurting for acceptance and one side is hurting for acknowledgment.

I was at a social event last week where a normal-looking girl started telling me what a genius a certain South African billionaire is & how he “fixed our wasteful gov’t”. Everyone was just smiling & nodding along with her, which was when I realized I needed to get out of there. It has made socializing & making new friends extra challenging.

As someone with chronic illness and a compromised immune system, it’s distressing to realize how much of the population at best doesn’t care if you die and at worst hope you die. It’s difficult to trust anyone after seeing that.

as a mom of an immune compromised child, i was told by friends and strangers that her life didnt matter. Yeah, I stopped socializing. I also still mask. Covid is still here and still deadly and I just cant care about people who dont care about anyone else.

I felt this acutely when Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed, even after Christine Blasey Ford testified. Every awful vote he has taken since, when people act shocked I want to scream. Then Covid, I almost died. It hurt deeply to have family and friends tell me something that nearly killed me wasn’t real. I have cut probably 60% of people out of my life. The people that remain are true friends.

Gosh, I’m so sorry to hear this. That sounds like a really difficult place to be. ❤️I found that coming out of the pandemic, I actually had a deeper openness and curiosity about other people, and a greater capacity to hold their complexity and strangeness in my heart. I found the whole experience really changed how I see people, and I could see more clearly that we’re all scared and vulnerable and fallible at times. For me, I feel it’s important to discriminate about who I allow close, but othering people and dehumanising them because they don’t agree with me isn’t the world I want to be part of creating.

Yeah abused kids been feeling this way our entire lives. All the therapists try to talk ya out of believing that people really suck but nahhhh they definitely do. A lifetime of lived experiences prove it. Now the world is living that kind of moral injury. Sorry y’all.
