@stupidlittlegenius: The real reason of why we say “breakfast” instead of “break-fast” is because English change the meaning of fast half way through the meal. Originally it meant holding firm against temptation! Of course, back in the Middle Ages, people didn’t even eat breakfast! It was a big no no! So glad that’s over and done with though, because I need bacon to start the day!! #creatorsearchinsights #foodfacts #breakfast #etymology #linguistics

Another question: is there any etymological correlation between 'fast' as speed (adjective) and 'fast' as 'firm' (noun)?

I eat a single egg at 11 AM, and then maybe a slice of lunch meat at noon. No more food for me until evening.

what are (1) the origins of "brunch" and (2) what about people have a late breakfast but this is not "brunch" as these people also have lunch?

Was the medieval era the place where breakfast became a thing for other languages like French petite dejuner meaning little lunch or Spanish desayuno un fast or dis fast or was this exclusively English??

This was apropos. I saw someone watching a period drama realizing “breakfast” meant “break your fast” from a character welcoming another to do so with eggs and kidneys. 🤪 The more we know 🌈
