Consistently walking away from arguments feeling completely confused, unable to even reconstruct what just happened, is rarely a sign you're bad at communicating. It's usually a sign of tactics that are genuinely hard to spot in real time, common in emotionally abusive relationships precisely because they're designed to work without your conscious awareness. The pattern tends to show up in three moves. First, denial, flatly rejecting what happened or subtly reframing it until you start questioning your own memory. Second, the focus flips onto you, your sensitivity, your personality, your reaction, until you're somehow defending yourself instead of being heard. Third, and the one that catches almost everyone off guard, the person positions themselves as the one who's suffering, sometimes through fragile self-criticism that looks genuinely vulnerable. Compassion is instinctive, so you end up comforting the very person who caused the harm, and your original concern disappears entirely. What makes this especially disorienting in an emotionally abusive relationship is that pointing the pattern out rarely helps, someone using it will usually have a ready response for that too, and naming it in the moment tends to pull you deeper into confusion rather than out of it. The more useful move is recognising the shape of it early and simply exiting the conversation, no justifying, no apologising, no over-explaining. You don't need to win anything to leave. Ending the conversation and coming back to it later, once you've had space to think clearly, protects your own reality far better than trying to out-argue an emotionally abusive dynamic that was never designed to be resolved through argument in the first place Official accounts and resources: www.ellyanastasiades.com #emotionallyabusiverelationship #relationshipabuse #emotionalabuse #relationshiptok #toxicrelationship
