ANNE :
People love the validation they get from society for performing or practicing certain hobbies that are considered a status symbol for intelligence. People love to compete as well, because competition can increase your confidence vastly.

Intellectual consumerism is exactly it. That’s how I feel about the trend of buying lots of books and never reading them. It’s fine to a point, but when is it just you buying shit to seem like someone you aren’t?

this is a really good reminder. thank you. i can't help but feel incredibly anxious and terrible because i take so long to read books in comparison to those i see online. we know it's impossible to finish two books in one day, but you can't help but compete and see how far you can go beyond that absurdity LOLDKKW

This is why I started annotating my books. I don’t want to consume, I want to devour and digest!

One of my hobbies is literally to read and write and I have been reading just one novel for about two weeks and still haven't finished it. What is the rush with everything? Why must we have to feel more superior versus everyone else? Like the point of reading is to have fun and understand new perspectives. I don't care if your Albert Einstein dawg, if you finish something like Game Of Thrones in one sitting, you haven't absorbed anything from that book. I can read something in a 5 minutes. Let me just flip through the whole thing while reading just the first word of each page and done. That's literally what they're doing.

i saw this comment that said “do i actually want this, or do i just want people to know that i have it?” and honestly i feel like that question perfectly captures what ur talking about. feels like people nowadays are constantly seeking validation and competing over things they don’t even genuinely want
