The region has very strong Russian influence, and walking around can genuinely feel like stepping into another era: Russian is everywhere, you can still find Lenin statues, Soviet symbols, monuments and architecture, and even its own currency. It has honestly been one of the most interesting places I’ve ever visited. And something that surprised me even more: the people I met were extremely kind and welcoming. If you ever go, I highly recommend staying at least one night instead of just doing a quick day trip. It completely changes the experience.
