I think what you might be refering to is Chicanos and Mexicans from the Santisima Muerte Community that often refer to her as “mami” notice I didn’t spell it “mommy”? That’s because in our culture when we speak Spanish we often add a little something at the end as a term of both respect and endearment”. When you hear us call her “Mami” that is typically what we call our mother’s but with a hint of beautiful or gorgeous hence the way we mean it is “Beautiful/Gorgeous Mother” we also use “ita” a lot as well as in “Mamita” which is a way of verbally spoiling her just because we love her so much however we do not refer to her with the English “mommy” as that really doesn’t have much of a ring of admiration to it! It’s a cultural thing and it is what it is.
