Found in the mountainous Yungas cloud forests on the eastern slopes of the Bolivian Andes near La Paz, it was long known to local communities as "tilcayo" — a name that inspired its scientific designation — but locals had mistaken it for an ordinary house cat. It's tiny — about 45cm / 18 inches long and around 1.4kg / 3 pounds, smaller than a domestic cat, with light brown fur patterned with dark, irregular rosettes like a miniature leopard and rounded ears. The story started by accident when biologist and National Geographic explorer Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz noticed a kitten brought into a Bolivian wildlife sanctuary didn't match any known tiger cat. An international team led by Eduardo Eizirik and Nogales-Ascarrunz then did whole-genome sequencing of 38 cats — the most complete genetic study yet of the group — and found the tilcayo forms a distinct lineage that diverged about 1.4 million years ago. The results were published this week — September 17th — in the journal *Current Biology*, culminating work that began in 2021.
