my boss has done this to me. I was hired to fix and run the buildings facility maintenance and show the inexperienced gm how its supposed to run. did so well she just keeps piling on more and when i bring up issues to it, I am being too "demanding" or "passive aggressive" with the staff, when literally just saying what needs to be done or how it should be done. and then all the work orders that need her approval just sit months sometimes on her desk, and I constantly have to ask about or remind her. if she would be on top of it things would be so much quicker and better. needless to say i am looking for ways to get out at the same level of income or more since I have bills

I did not stop being efficient. I stop appearing to be efficient. Thus no extra work for me.

I don’t mind doing more work if I’m recognised and rewarded. The fact now is that I’m getting the same grading as someone who does lesser work while other new staff got reappointed to a higher rank.

I WANT to be busy, feel free to give me things ESPECIALLY when I ask for it. At the same time when I call out someone that isn't even meeting half of established minimum metrics and getting told I'm "picking on them" is a load a bull. If you can't support me support everyone else I'm not going to support you anymore.

I have a fantastic boss. He acknowledges my competency. As I proved myself, he gives me more and more latitude. He gives me less and less to do and gives me the room to go out and find my own work. Because I have the ability to find where the biggest problems are and eliminate them. I would say he gives me around 5% of the actual work that I do. The rest, I find myself. He has said multiple times he gets more out of me when he gives me less to do, and he loves that.

The reward for doing your work quickly, efficiently, and well should be higher compensation, promotion, etc. but yes, what happens is it only results in more work. So at some point high performers see this and stop trying so hard. No reason to do twice the work for the same pay.

It is taxing... Also, giving you more and more, forces you to out perform your peers, JUST so you're not fired, and now, the whole building isolates you, thinking you're showing off or whatever... I am ONLY there still, because AI wreaked the job market

I asked if I could hand something easy to another AGM and was told it would be best if I just did it. That was one of the final straws!

“This is an essential step in our workflow for every client visit, but you’re assigning responsibility for it to a role that is only staffed about 60% of the time. What happens to our workflow the other 40%?” Yep - I’m the troublemaker with a bad attitude because I pointed out a guaranteed problem in the plan. But I learned my lesson: now I just shut up, and let them roll out whatever they want. I’ve gotten very good at keeping the smugness off my face when it fails in the precise way I knew it would. 🙄

In my 30 years as a Research Analyst we went through 24 managers. I was one of a team of 6 analysts, between us we had a combined 130+ years of institutional knowledge. Some managers lasted a week, others lasted a few years, but the average was 18 months~. I really felt that they were irrelevant at best, and a hurdle at worst. They came and went so quickly that in hindsight I can probably remember the names of 4 or 5. Nearly every one asked what I needed from them, “please, just stay out of the way. The only thing we need in a manager is someone who will fetch coffee, lunch, and a person who hates meetings. We need a person to break trail, remove obstacles and keep others who wish to distract us away. We need a manager to work for us, not the other way around. If you can do that we’re golden, if not then I’ll have forgotten tour name by next week.”
