@cbsla: A Los Angeles County judge could soon decide the fate of the controversial plan to eradicate Catalina Island's deer population. The Catalina Island Conservancy, the organization that manages and protects the area, has long said the deer are an invasive species brought to the island nearly 100 years ago that has created a fire hazard by feasting on the native plant life. The Coalition to Save Catalina Island Deer is hoping to stop the killing, with a hearing currently set for the day the eradication plan is set to begin.
Don’t they reduce fire hazards by grazing high dry areas???????

If you're upset about this, blame the colonizers who brought the invasive deer to the island in the 1930s. Channel your frustrations into replacing your Eurasian landscaping with native plants that will actually contribute something to your local ecosystem

Then the California fishing game should give out permits and allow people to hunt them to manage their numbers

Rich people want to kill the deer because they’re eating their vineyards. There isn’t evidence of damage done to the island.

It’s just deer. There’s a million more of them all over the USA. It’s an overpopulation issue. The deer are gonna eat all that islands native plants, flowers, etc. there’s more deer than there is vegetation

California will save a useless fish and let people's houses burn to the ground, but as soon as a deer eats a rich person grapes off the vine, well it sucks to be Bambi

This sounds fishy, the mule deer, eat the shrubbery which keeps the keeps the foliage down less material to burn. Why would you want to eradicate something that happily doing it service to itself and the surrounding environment?

I got a hundred bucks that if they eliminate all the deer 70 percent of the island burns in within ten years.

All of the plants on Catalina are evolved to deal with deer just as they do on the mainland

Makes no sense. Just move them. You don’t have to kill them. The deer are eating plants that can cause wildfires, isn’t thst a benefit and a preventative service?

An unlikely ally? Really? Just because it’s a group that supports guns, does NOT mean the group does not support wildlife management and preservation. Quite the contrary. Hunters do more for wildlife conservation in the United States than any other group in the nation.
