Sit with it. Sit with the pain. Stop trying to run from it every second just because it’s uncomfortable. Cry until you can’t cry anymore. Be angry. Be confused. Be numb. Sit in silence and let your mind process what just happened to you. Exposure helps. Feeling it helps. Running from it might make you feel better for a little while, but eventually you have to face what hurts. That’s something I’m learning the hard way right now. These past couple of days have completely drained me mentally, emotionally, and physically. I’ve been trying to process being sexually assaulted while my body is still hurting and my mind is trying to understand everything that happened. I’ve had to talk to professionals. I’ve had to explain things I never wanted to have to explain. I’ve had people question me when I already question myself enough. I’ve had someone I cared about tell me I wasn’t even raped, question my trauma, and speak publicly about things that were never theirs to speak about. Somehow, during one of the lowest moments of my life, I still found myself having to defend my pain instead of simply being allowed to feel it. I’ve cried. I’ve been angry. I’ve been numb. I’ve slept because sometimes being awake meant thinking too much. I’ve wanted everyone to leave me alone while also wishing someone would just sit beside me and make me feel safe. My body hurts. My mind hurts. I’m exhausted in a way that sleep doesn’t fix. And I’m tired of feeling like I have to prove that I’m hurting enough for people to take me seriously. So I’m sitting with it. I’m sitting with the anger. The sadness. The betrayal. The fear. The confusion. The memories. The questions I may never get answers to. The things people have said to me that I wish I could erase from my mind. I’m letting myself feel it instead of pretending I’m okay just because being sad makes other people uncomfortable. I cannot change what happened to me. I cannot control what other people say about me. I cannot force someone to believe me, understand me, or have compassion for something they didn’t experience. I cannot keep destroying myself trying to make people understand that my pain is real. Healing doesn’t mean I wake up tomorrow and suddenly everything is okay. Healing might mean I cry again tomorrow. It might mean I get angry. It might mean I turn my phone off and disappear for a while. It might mean I don’t answer anyone. It might mean saying, “I cannot handle this today.” It might mean finally distancing myself from people I love because loving someone should never require me to sacrifice my own peace. I’m allowed to not be okay right now. I’m allowed to have bad days. I’m allowed to be quiet. I’m allowed to change my mind. I’m allowed to need space. I’m allowed to heal at my own pace without explaining every step of it to everyone watching me. So sit with it. Let it hurt. Let yourself feel every part of it. Cry if you need to. Be angry if you need to. Rest if you need to. But don’t build a permanent home inside of temporary pain. One day you’ll notice it doesn’t hurt quite as much. Then another day you’ll realize you went a few hours without thinking about it. Eventually you’ll look back and realize something that once felt like it was going to completely destroy you didn’t. It hurt you. It changed you. But it did not get to keep you.
