I personally don’t think an HOA should be more than $200/mo unless they can PROVE where alllll that money is going on a quarterly basis to everyone who pays HOA fees

As someone who owned a condo and was on the board I saw this firsthand. Residents would vote to delay work as much as possible, cut service costs, veto preventative maintenance, etc. Until the day came when the roof was leaking, elevator needed an overhaul, ac unit broke, and we had to levy a huge assessment to get everything back up to code and working order. It was infuriating

maybe this is just me but I wouldn't care if the fee was 900 or 5 dollars. the fact there's an HOA at all is enough to steer me away from a house or condo entirely

Do HOAs get audited? Are they regulated in any way? Because I wouldn't be surprised if some of this was to keep "the rabble" out.

people grossly underestimate the cost of homeownership. Repairs never end. Whether your paying an HOA, or all by yourself, you're gonna pay.

It's crazy bc in theory maintenance cost spilt between 50 people should be less than a house.

Has nothing to do with age really. It’s corrupt boards and corrupt management companies running the price up

I pay 1200/month but that includes parking, all utilities including water heat cable internet and all maintenance (all plumbing/electrical/hvac/laundry maintenance). In the long run it washes or is ahead of when I owned a sfh.

I live in an old condo in Denver, HOA fee is $325 bringing in $200k a year. Our elevator broke and was going to be “expensive” to fix so it got put off for months. I’m like what are you doing with all those HOA fees? None of that money goes back into the building. We have someone that comes to vacuum and clean around the building 1x a month.

When the condo fee makes a 400 square foot place cost the same as a 2k square foot space they just can’t compete. With tiny condos, you can’t build an ADU or get a roommate in a tough situation. You can’t even shop around for the best price when work needs to be done, just stuck with whichever of their buddies they wanna give the work to and slap you with a special assessment.

if the fees are going to repairs and maintenance it's okay but I think the fees from years past were too low to acount for thier deterioration so now they are too high to try and bank roll before big expenses that are likely incoming.

i keep seeing condos for sale that COULD be within my Budget... but then HOA fees add 500-1000$ to monthly costs

My friend lives in a community where no one will ever vote for a special assessment to get all their badly leaking 35 year old roofs replaced. Instead, they all have to pay for the 1 or 2 at a time roof crises that pop up. It’s wildly inefficient. At my HOA, the fee has doubled because of a lawsuit we are in after our own special assessment. We have no office, mail room, tennis courts, pool, no common space at all except our parking lot that doesn’t have enough guest spaces. $450/month for the management company, lawyer, and landscaper. Soon the townhouses will be unsellable.

My best friends (they are twins) live in a town house from the 70s in a “gated” community but the gate has been broken the whole time they’ve lived there. Their hoa fees are $800/month

I used to dream of buying a house, it shifted to a condo. I’m starting to abandon that as well.

I’ve never wanted a home, I’ve always preferred condos or townhouses. No idea how that’s gonna happen with this HOA clown show

When HOA fees are as much as a mortgage then what is the incentive to buy a condo? The fees are insane and are nothing more than price gouging.

Yep! I rent a condo built in 1965 in a VHCOL area in the DC area. We LOVE our unit and our neighborhood and would love to buy it but can’t justify the 1.4k monthly condo fee. So we will continue renting at a much lower rate.
