Minjeong barely touched her breakfast. She was too conscious of everyone around the table. After what Jimin had said to her the night before, every movement suddenly felt wrong. She didn’t know whether she was supposed to talk to Ning, look at Ning, or even sit beside her. Across the table, Jimin quietly drank her coffee. She hadn’t said a word to Minjeong that morning. Somehow, that made everything worse. Ning noticed. She had been talking about something that happened at school, but halfway through her story, she stopped and looked at Minjeong. “Why are you so quiet?” Minjeong quickly shook her head. “I’m fine.” “You’re not.” “I am.” Ning frowned. “You’ve barely eaten.” Minjeong glanced at Jimin. The older girl was still looking at her. Not obviously. Just enough for Minjeong to know that she was being watched. “Maybe she’s nervous,” Ryujin said. Everyone looked at her. Ryujin immediately straightened in her chair. “What?” “You’re unusually awake this morning,” Yeji said. Ryujin glared at her. “I am perfectly capable of waking up early.” “Ning told me you slept through the orientation yesterday.” Ryujin turned toward Ning. Ning suddenly became very interested in her breakfast. “I was tired.” “Really? From what?” Yeji took another sip of coffee. Ryujin opened her mouth. Then closed it. She had an answer. But Jimin wouldn’t like it. For the first time that morning, Minjeong almost smiled at their bickering. Then Yeji’s phone rang. “I have a meeting in twenty minutes.” She stood from her chair. Jimin looked up. Minjeong almost let out the breath she had been holding when Jimin’s attention shifted away from her. “Already?” Jimin asked. She reached over and briefly took Yeji’s hand. Minjeong’s eyes immediately fell on their joined hands. Jimin didn’t seem to notice her watching. “I moved it earlier,” Yeji replied. “Why?” “Because Ryujin promised she’d help me with something yesterday.” Jimin released her hand. Ryujin immediately choked on her coffee. “I did?” “You did.” “I don’t remember.” “I know.” Yeji walked past her. “That’s why I stopped relying on your memory.” Ryujin stared after her. “Wait. Are you angry?” “No.” “You sound angry.” “I am not angry.” “You’re definitely angry.” Yeji stopped at the doorway. “I’m disappointed.” Then she left. Ryujin looked genuinely offended. “That’s worse.” Minjeong watched her. She wondered how Yeji had ever managed to get Ryujin to promise her anything in the first place. Aeri cleared her throat. When Minjeong looked over, she saw the older girl placing a plate of perfectly sliced apples in front of Jimin. Out of everyone at the table, Aeri had cut fruit only for Jimin. Nobody reacted. Apparently, this was normal. Minjeong wasn’t sure what to make of that. “You’re holding your spoon too tightly,” Aeri said. Minjeong immediately held it even tighter. Because Aeri’s words had caused Jimin’s attention back on her. Jimin calmly picked up a slice of apple and ate it without taking her eyes off Minjeong. Minjeong began to wonder if Aeri had something against her. How could she stir the pot and then sit there as if she had done nothing? “You don’t need to look so frightened,” Aeri said. Minjeong looked at her. Aeri’s expression remained unreadable. “Jimin hasn’t asked you to leave yet.” Jimin’s eyes shifted toward Aeri. Minjeong froze. Did she hear their conversation last night? Aeri didn’t seem bothered by the attention she had attracted. She simply turned back to eating. Continue in the comment sections. #jiminjeong #ningselle #ryeji
