@dr.erin.phd: I recorded this when I was having a really hard time after telling my colleagues I was quitting my job as a professor. Feeling so grateful to have been able to transition to another career that I love so much (and brings much less stress!) #professor #college #academia #phd #teachersoftiktok
To play devils advocate here, it’s a bit of a slap in the face to your department and the college to leave the year you get tenure. People took time to read your materials and write you recommendations. I mean they’re allowed to have feelings too.

I’m so sorry. Academia is so toxic, I was so shocked how dysregulated and mean clinical psych faculty can be ;(

The fact that you got tenure suggests that many of your colleagues supported you. I imagine many of them are now hurt and angry. They are processing, which is healthy… though it is disappointing to hear how they are managing their feelings.

So what. They are mean because they d not have the guts to quit and they really want to. Im a full professor and i can tell you we all hate it. Those who can get out do. As a department cvair, i do not pressure professors tro stick it out

Did you do this right before the semester was supposed to start?

You were one of the first academia creators I followed and you’ve helped more people than those colleagues ever will. Proud of you for choosing yourself. You deserve every bit of that new happiness. The way they treated you says everything about them and nothing about you. You’ve been one of my favorite follows since day one, and seeing you land somewhere that brings you peace is the best possible ending. Rooting for you always.

So hard! And real. Bullying in academia is rampant. When I got moved to a tenure line, a colleague told me directly it was just because I was bubbly and didn’t deserve it. I got called “a favorite.” She went to other colleagues and tried to get them to rank who deserved it most and least (with me obviously being least). My publication record and teaching stood for itself, but I still question if the whole thing is worth it! It’s been much harder on me than I realized. Best wishes on next steps.

I'm surprised, since you got tenure, did you try to find a tenured position at another department that's a better environment? Curious if you'd be willing to talk about that choice vs the direction you've ultimately chosen?

That sort of behavior is horrible and stinks of insecurity AND jealousy! It's an amazing accomplishment to be a professor at all, but to be a TENURED professor is incredible. You are obviously an excellent academic (even AFTER you quit -- they can never take your hard earned accomplishments away from you)! You are also such a kind, thoughtful person in your tiktoks/replies/mannerisms in general! I'm so glad you left.

Half of them couldn’t even imagine a life without that job. So to see someone be confident in leaving and starting something on their own is soooo intimidating to them. Don’t feel bad- it’s rooted in insecurity

Omg this hurts as an empath. I think it’s the first video I’ve seen where you’re not smiling. Quitting a toxic work environment to pursue the things that made you happy is so much more important. Change is mandatory for true growth. ❤️

I know the feeling. The level of pretentiousness in academia is out of control. I actually left psychology after undergrad because every one of my professors in that dept. was an asshole. Its weird because this is supposed to be a "helping profession." I'm glad I discovered sociology and political science. Good folks over there....

As someone who also works in mental health research, it can be shocking how little some professors (i.e., clinical psychologists, psychiatrists) care about others mental wellbeing…

I quit my PhD program three years in because my department head continually harassed me. I filed a title ix complaint. Nothing came of it. Academia is horrendous.

I attended a summer research program where I was the only person who was not a psych major and intending to get a clinical psych phd. I was relentlessly bullied the whole summer largely because I’m queer. I spent pretty much the whole nine weeks locked in my room alone. I don’t understand how these people are going to become psychologists if they cannot be kind and caring human beings

To be fair you did quit just before the start of the school year if it hasn’t started yet. I have watched your other videos and I totally understand your perspective and the reasons why you are quitting, but I feel like you should’ve done it at the end of the spring semester.
