It's also the reason why the meaning of words changes over time. people hear a new word and apply a meaning to it based on the context of its use, which isn't actually correct…petrified with fear for example. Petrified means to become like stone (in other words to become stiff/rigid with fear), but now it's also listed in dictionaries as meaning to be scared in its own right, after years of being so misused in that context. The misuse became so widespread that the meaning of the word was irrevocably changed. It also helps if you get into the habit of thinking in the language you're learning, rather than thinking in your native language and then trying to translate it. It gets easier as you become more fluent, but then the more you think in that language, the more fluent you'll become and the smoother your conversations will flow
