It took place at midnight on July 1, 1997. 🇬🇧 How did Britain control Hong Kong? British control began in the 19th century. After the First Opium War, Britain obtained Hong Kong Island in 1842. Britain later obtained Kowloon in 1860 and leased the New Territories for 99 years beginning in 1898. The 99-year lease was important because the New Territories made up most of Hong Kong's territory. As the 1997 deadline approached, Britain and China began negotiating Hong Kong's future. 🤝 The agreement In 1984, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Chinese Premier Zhao Ziyang signed the Sino-British Joint Declaration. They agreed that Hong Kong would return to Chinese sovereignty in 1997. China promised that Hong Kong's existing economic and social systems would remain largely unchanged for 50 years, under the principle known as “one country, two systems.” 🌃 The night of June 30, 1997 On the final night of British rule, a major handover ceremony was held in Hong Kong. At midnight: 🇬🇧 British flag → 🇨🇳 Chinese flag British administration officially ended, and China resumed sovereignty over Hong Kong.
