I know it makes me odd man out, but you never heard about the towns they turned into lakes? The towns still fully exist in the depths. One famous one is Lake Lanier in Georgia. Plenty more I can’t name, but all constructed pretty much like you said, just a river redirect to flood an area.

This is atleast a reasonable confusion. I was in my early 30s when I said out loud with excessive confidence, that Alaska was an island. 😳 I was corrected and I even argued for a brief moment because, "Alaska is an island, just like Hawaii, its on the map, look it up." 😳 Yeah, it was not a good moment.
