I disagree. I had a friend for 12 years, (since I was 4) and we were secretly in love. When we were 10, we started dating. But there was some uncomfortable moments, manipulation, fights and I decided I can’t be with him. It was kind of painful but no more. I did one painful thing to him just to keep our friendship. I kept being nice but like a bit more cold, and alone. Then he had no idea why that happened and he lost feelings. Then he said we should broke up, because of that, but because of our long friendship and fun we had together we stayed friends.
