@mima.creates: Being a woman is, in part, learning to look at yourself through the eyes of men. Pretty, but not too pretty. Made up, but not obviously made up. Attractive, but not trying to be attractive. Effortless, but preferably after quite a lot of effort. I learnt the rules early: don’t be too plain, don’t be too much; look natural, but improve on nature; be desirable, but don’t look like you want to be desired. And then you put on makeup because you genuinely enjoy it and someone tells you that, really, you only like it because men like it. Which is funny, considering men spend a lot of time telling women they prefer them without it. Sometimes I think the whole thing is just one long exercise in controlling women’s bodies.
