Retirement is not an age , it's a dollar amount.

If you leave your job for retirement, you can pull money out of your 401K at 55. It’s called the rule of 55.

Average lifespan of a male is 83. So if I wait till 70 to pull that money, I only get 13 years of payments. I’m starting at 62 and enjoying it.

I retired at 58 after 35 years at Los Angeles county. The county paid for my health insurance for the 7 years before I got Medicare. Now they reimburse me for the base part B premium of $202 monthly, plus they pay for whatever Medicare supplement we choose and for the part D premium. And nominal eye and dental insurance. Oh and there’s also the very huge pension for working 35 years with a built in COLA yearly of 3%. It pays to work for the government, that’s for sure. (We also got a 10% match on our 401k.)

Everyone should take social security at 62. You’re not guaranteed a single day on this planet, so why would someone wait based on math that assumes you’ll live past the average American into your 80’s?

For me, I’ll be retiring at 55. The IRS Rule of 55 allows you to pull money from your 401K without penalty at 55 if you retire from your employer.

I will be retiring at 55 at the latest due to the rule of 55, where I can withdraw from my 401k without penalty. My HSA and strategic use of taxable income will bridge my Healthcare gap. Planning early makes retirement easy. Its unfortunate they never teach the basic fundamentals of investing.

"Full retirement age" has no meaning. You can start Social Security at 62. For every month you delay your start, it increases 0.7% (I think). Whenever you start is the amount you get each month for life.

Full retirement- I’m guessing 70. I have friends that are retired lawyers and docs that are teaching skiing and guiding fly fishing trips. I’m not sure I’ll work much past 64 but I won’t stop teaching skiing until I have to. I’ve reconciled the fact that my wealth will probably end up going to my kids, nursing home or cancer treatment.

Retirement is so individual. I plan on 58-59, I’m currently 47. At that point, I won’t fully retire. Just take a job that has some benefits that’s far less stressful, and know I can just leave if I hate it. Honestly, if more Americans knew that the insurance is what really holds us back, more people would probably be for national healthcare.
