@rachel.tyers: Here are 5 things I learned: 1. You don’t need to pay cash for all of those flights. You can use credit card points and just pay taxes and fees in cash. I only spent $4,197 on the 8 flights (worth $57,131). 2. You do need to have a lot of credit card points, but it’s not that hard to earn the points once you know how to do it. Opening new cards for welcome offers, spending strategically on the right cards, and using shopping portals and other platforms to earn bonus points will help get you there faster. I spent 769,100 points on this round the world trip. 3. Don’t redeem points in your credit card issuer’s portal. It’s usually poor value. You’re better off using a third-party tool that searches across multiple airlines at once to find the cheapest points pricing. Seats.aero, pointsyeah.com and point.me are a few that I use. 4. Flexibility is key. You’re gonna have the best chance at finding great award pricing and availability if you are flexible with the dates that you can travel. Being flexible with the airport that you fly out of (or to) can help you even more. 5. There are ways to stretch your points even further that aren’t immediately obvious to most people. Sometimes it’s cheaper to buy an award flight through an airlines’s partner instead of the airline operating the flight. Sometimes the 3rd party flight search tools don’t surface all of the flight options. And when I need extra points for a flight, I have some specific hacks that I turn to.
