A man was pulled out of the window of his burning car seconds before flames engulfed the vehicle in an act of highway “heroism”. Southlake Police Corporal Joshua Swisher was alerted to reports of a vehicle approaching his location “with heavy smoke coming from it” on June 7. “Within seconds of coming to a stop, flames began spreading from underneath the vehicle,” the Texas force said. As the fire intensified, the police force said, Mr Swisher “immediately recognised the driver had not yet exited the vehicle” and “without hesitation” moved towards the burning car. After smashing the window, Mr Swisher “pulled the driver to safety before the fire could fully engulf the vehicle”. The driver escaped the blaze without serious injury and Mr Swisher has since been recognised with a bravery award. “For his courage, decisive action, and commitment to protecting others”, Mr Swisher was recently presented with the Southlake Police Department’s Meritorious Conduct Award, the Department’s second-highest honour. The award recognises employees who demonstrate “exceptional courage, professionalism, and performance in the face of significant danger”.
