Actually decanter’s have a specific shape for a reason when it pertains to wine the more surface area touching open air allows for the wine to breathe better and open quicker. Yes, it’s not really necessary for wine that is not aged longer than 6 years wine that is older needs it. Aeration is good for younger wine as it doesn’t need as much air to open up.
