that's not really true: - er fährt das Kind um = he hits the child - er umfährt das Kind = he drives around the child you can't mix it up in this way. But if you say "lasst uns das Kind umfahren" it can be both meanings 🤷

No, the example is not true. "Er fähr das Kind um." means ‘He drives over the kid.‘ if you want to say 'He drives arount the kid.' than you need to say "Er fährt um das Kind." Still absolutely clear to natives.

"Er fährt das Kind um" only means that he runs it over, he drives around it would be "Er umfährt das Kind" since UMfahren can be split up but umFAHREN can't be split up
