Frodo solved it in the book, why would they give it to Merry in the movie?

It’s such a goofy thing because I don’t think switching that part made me as a viewer think or feel like Gandalf & Frodo were any closer by Frodo solving the riddle… 🤔

Merry doesn’t actually solve it in the book. He asks what the inscription says and after Gandalf tells him after a while he realizes it actually means “say friend and enter”.
