Here’s the real secret to propagating ZZ leaves — and how to care for them when they’re actively growing so they don’t stall out or rot. If you’ve ever tried propagating ZZ plants, you know they test your patience. But with the right setup, the right water level, and a bit of understanding about how these plants grow, you’ll end up with healthy, thriving rhizomes that are ready for soil. Let’s go step by step. ✂️ Step 1: Choose and prepare your leaves Start with a healthy mother plant — one that’s been watered recently and is free of pests. Use sharp, sanitized pruners (I like 70% isopropyl alcohol for this). 💧 Step 2: Create your propagation setup You’ll need a small bowl or glass of water and a piece of styrofoam (recycled from packaging works great). Cut the styrofoam to fit in the container and make notches around the edge so you can slide the leaves in. Each notch should hold one leaf securely, with the cut edge pointing down. 💡 Step 3: Light and patience ZZ plants like bright, indirect light. A grow light or a bright window is perfect — just avoid direct sun. 🪨 Step 4: Transplanting to soil Once you see marble-sized rhizomes with tiny roots emerging, it’s time to move them to soil. I use what I call my 1/3 Mix; equal parts coir, peat, and perlite.       •     The coir and peat hold moisture, so the rhizomes stay hydrated without sitting in water.       •     The perlite adds drainage and airflow, which helps prevent rot. Place a layer of the mix at the bottom of your pot, then set the leaf with its rhizome on top. Gently cover it with more mix — just enough to keep it stable — and lightly compact the soil. 🌱 Step 5: Early care and growth After transplanting, water lightly to settle the mix, but don’t overdo it. Keep your plant in bright, indirect light and watch for small stems or new leaves emerging — that’s the sign the rhizomes are active and growing. 💦 Bonus: I’ll show you one simple watering trick in this video that’ll keep your ZZ plants growing faster and healthier year-round. #houseplants #houseplants #zzplant
