@sharghzadeh: Thanks @human1011 for the spirited debate (and the cool videos you otherwise create) #linguistics #language #etymology #pronunciation #dialect
you may not go up to “layli” and tell them their name is actually “layla”, but if someone did call her “layla”, of course not out of a place of disrespect, would she be wrong to correct their pronunciation and say “actually, my name is layli, not layla”? i feel like there’s something unique in proper nouns. if an american’s name is spelled “john” but they pronounce it different than the way most americans are used to hearing it, wouldn’t it be wrong to say “no you’re pronouncing your name wrong”? once one has the knowledge that someone’s name is pronounced differently than they originally thought, i think it’s only respectful to pronounce their name as it was given to them. same could be said for countries, such as dominica. if someone is pronouncing it wrong simply because they don’t know better, okay. but once they learn the correct pronunciation, i do feel like it’s only respectful to correct yourself and intentionally saying “nah, i’ll pronounce it as i like” is somewhat disrespectful. this of course only being applicable if one speaks the same language as the countries endonym.

I disagree. Just like if your legal or preferred name is refused to be pronounced correctly, or you're called a whole different name entirely just because "it's easier", you have the right to be upset and correct them. Same thing goes for your homeland, for which it would be helpful if everyone agreed on the name and pronunciation that those who live it every day prefer.

i agree with shargzadeh..
i would like to add .. when it comes to country names just say the English version of the name .. there's no need to try to pronounce it " correctly" or how the natives pronounce it ..
for example " Qatar " just say katar .. cuz the original arabic name has 2 letters that dont even exist in English so its futile to even try to come close to the " correct" pronunciation and please stop saying " cutter" its way worse than " katar"

Isn't this Straw Man Fallacy? I don't think he's saying it's okay to correct people if they're mispronouncing people, especially that he never said "it's okay to correct people". You might think his argument is about prescriptivism, and about correcting people when they're mispronouncing, but I think his argument is about descriptivism (which is what he's saying about in the actual video, unlike you putting words that isnt actually said btw). He never said "Hey, you should correct people pronunciation if they're wrong" he's saying "The actual pronunciation is this", and he never said the need to correct people. It's just that mispronouncing the certain country can be misleading, e.g Dominican (do-MIN-i-can) for Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 people, and Dominican (do-mi-NI-can) for Dominica 🇩🇲 people.

The thing about this is you're both right.
We should usually bias towards linguistic descriptivism. But that doesn't mean prescriptive linguistics has absolutely zero value. Conforming to the standard helps you be understood. And, though we may disagree with the judgement morally, it prevents you from being stigmatized as a poor communicator or someone of low status, which will distract people from what you're trying to say. (We can disagree personally with this, but the reality is people will do it.)
At the same time, the standard itself is subject to change, and millions of people "getting it wrong" will eventually win over people who insist on maintaining *their* standards. These changes favor making more things regular and fewer things irregular, so something like how you pronounce a niche foreign word counterintuitively to its spelling, that will lose out eventually, and we shouldn't get too attached to it.

you're changing the topic now his first video that you intended to correct was purely about the correct pronunciation and that was it but you said that it's not wrong if people just identify and know what it means and both can be correct which you both now agree is incorrect but now your point is that even if it is incorrect who are we to correct those people that's a different topic all together so the initial point of yours is simply incorrect

If someone pronounced germany with a hard G, they would probably appreciate you telling them the more conventional pronunciation and switch after they were made aware. No ones holding a gun to their head or telling them they cant pronounce it that way

I dont know what your all argument about. But i know, in every language there are words. And those words are pronounced in a way or another depending on the accent. However, most of the time there is a base tone or base pronunciation for it. Like in Arabic we call it “فصحى"

Latin/Romance loanwords are English words though. Words of foreign origin (especially French and Latin) actually make up the bulk of English vocabulary. When we use them while speaking English, we’re not speaking Latin or French or whatever. We’re speaking English so we are pronouncing them correctly according to English pronunciation.
