It is rational to understand that when Allah said the earth was "swaying" until He placed the mountains as stabilizers, this implies a flat, spread-out surface rather than a spherical one. A round body cannot "sway" back and forth in the same way a flat plane can; rather, a flat expanse could lose balance when one side bears more weight than the other. The mountains then serve as anchors that distribute equilibrium across the surface. Moreover, the statements of the Salaf, Ibn Mas'üd, and the Companions describing the sky as a dome built over the earth reinforce this logic: a dome naturally covers something flat beneath it, just as a roof covers a floor. A dome enclosing a sphere would cease to be a dome-it would instead be a shell surrounding a ball. Thus, the imagery of a heavenly dome fits coherently only with a flat, extended earth beneath it.
