Forgiveness is a construct of the church. It allows atrocities without consequences or accountability.

Lol that's why people get so angry at me when they tell me "you have to forgive x". Because my response is always "I already forgave them. I still will not grant them access to me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯"

I cannot stand this narrative of “forgiveness (for someone else) is the first necessary step to your own healing” or even better, the only other option is being bitter or feeling resentment.

This is why I object against the way the church teach forgiveness especially in today’s time. Forgiveness is used to silenced/guilt trip the one harmed and cover the perpetrator. I feel like the order should be…acknowledging the harm, take accountability for one’s actions, followed by repentance (change of mind), make amends, and forgiveness will naturally flow after. But the way it’s now set up seems like bypassing resulting in putting the harm individual in a cycle of abuse. And if you look closely it almost look like they want you to pity the abuser rather than reproaching them. Also forgiveness doesn’t mean access is granted or restore because there is something’s a person just can’t come back from as they have taken it way too far.

And repair doesn’t work if majority of the conversation works on saying “I’m sorry that was ur interpretation, that wasn’t my private intention to come across that way, sorry YOU felt that way, but let’s talk about how your reaction is the main issue”

They’ll even bring religion into it to not feel shame. God told me you have to forgive me…when did you start practicing 😂🤣🚶🏻‍♂️

The thing is it's so difficult for me to stay mad at someone who shows full accountability and remorse. I can't help but forgive someone that truly tries their best. I just haven't met very many people capable of that unfortunately

My thought process was “I’m forgiving them for my sake” but I never assume they need my forgiveness in order to move on. They already moved on after they did it. They mentally existed in a space where what they did me either didn’t matter, didn’t impact them, or they ignored the harm it caused. To me forgiveness just means “I’m done trying to understand WHY they did this to me. I won’t give any more energy to this person” but my forgiveness hardly ever comes with access moving forward. I also rarely accept or acknowledge accountability or any attempts at repair. Too many of them can’t help but lash out or seek pity and comfort because of the guilt they feel and I won’t be a safe space for that.

But how do you curate a higher level of curiosity so you don't end up hurting people with criticism in the first place? cognitively, I know a lot. I am fairly aware after the fact where things went wrong and take accountability and repair. I feel like my brain is wired to make snap judgments and yes anything can be unlearned, but how? and also, how do you unlearn that unhealthy behavior while also still protecting yourself from people who do manipulate and have poor intentions? especially when you're someone who doesn't recognize social cues in the moment?

And don’t get me started on those that find Jesus. “God has forgiven me.” Ok Becky you didn’t cheat on God sooo you didn’t get the forgiveness from the right person.

this is sooo perfect. i left my narcissistic ex for patterns of emotional abuse. i went low contact (coparenting) and he refused to address his behavior that led to my leaving but would push for forgiveness and access. AS IFFF it was my damn responsibility!! naww im good 🙅‍♀️

the worst is when you explain why you are hurt - then instead of being accountable they ask " what did I do so that you don't react like that again ?" no self reflection or apology , just "how do I keep getting the version of you I want without you changing ? "

repair and accountability require internal examination, forgiveness relegates your shame to the other person as guilt so as they can forgive you. most people want forgiveness to elevate the shame without doing the necessary work of understanding the extent of their harm and empathize ,most people when they are the antagonizer or the unsafe get caught up in elevating the shame no matter what even if it harms victims ,again they push victims to self abandon and by pushing for forgiveness framing forgiveness as virtuous, yet the victims should solely focus on themselves
