This 1964 Strat pickup isn’t working, and I am going to fix that. I already tried reflowing the solder joints on this thing and was still not getting a reading, and since it is lacquer potted, I wasn’t able to peel back the wire to look for a break, which means that this pickup needs a rewind. I started by getting the leads removed, I have seen Lindy Fralin remove solder from the eyelets by heating it up and just whacking the pickup against his desk, and I find this method to be as cathartic as it is effective. I took note of the magnet orientation because I am actually going to fully disassemble this pickup before rewinding. The bottom flatwork on this is pretty warped, and I also want to make sure that I can cut down on any leftover lacquer that the copper wire could potentially snag and break on. I carefully tapped out each magnet, making sure to keep track of which one was where. This pickup has staggered pole pieces, which means that mixing them up could negatively affect the pickup’s performance. Once I got everything taken apart, I went through the process of cleaning and straightening out the flatwork and getting everything put back together. Those clips are lost media, so I am just jumping straight to the rewind. Just like with the original, I am using 42 gauge Formvar wire. I was asked to shoot for a 6.1k ohm reading, so I used the winding calculator in my traverse and set everything up to do about 8100 turns. I also set the winder up to manual mode, so that I can control how fast the wire goes back and forth to give it a good scatter wind. Back in the 60s all of these pickups were handwound, making each pickup unique and no two pickups were exactly the same. This winder has the option to perfectly replicate a pickup design over and over again, but the manual mode will allow me to get that vintage sound. Do you have any vintage guitars? #guitar #bass #fender #gjbson #stratocaster
