Whenever we’re using a natural resource like wood, we want to make sure we make it last as long as possible. We reused these boards from a raised bed we deconstructed and wanted to be thoughtful about waterproofing to make sure they’d hold up to the moisture needed during seed starting. So we decided to try Shou Sugi Ban, a Japanese technique of treating cedar to increase its resistance to moisture. First we charred the wood, and then used a stiff wire brush to remove the soot. Then we rubbed the boards with a blend of food safe linseed oil and beeswax. By using this process instead of polyurethane, these will still be compostable at end of life and are a great alternative to plastic trays. #plasticfree #sustainable #gardening #gardening #flowergarden #cottagegarden
