About three years after we stopped ploughing our agronomist came out with a penetrometer and he could not find any compaction. He was disappointed because he believed in ploughing. In one of our better fields my brother drove it in as far as the handles . You heal soil from the top down .

instead of a pallet. Best thing is the old time bed springs. flattens it out and gathers up all the rocks.

This is not the way a test is done. You didn’t take a bottom compaction zone reading. Rate of speed of 1”/sec was not used. Also, was the reading taken at 24 hrs post a saturating rain? Did you take measurements every 100-150 ft (not in field margins or high compaction areas?) Taking a reading immediately after tillage is also not going to give accurate readings. Hitting 300 psi that quickly indicates either previous mechanical compaction (hard pan due to tillage), artificial layers, inappropriate tip for soil type, or a faulty test. Year 1 growth of no till vs tillage doesn’t tell you much. Other than you’ve just accessed deeper nutrient layers that you won’t get back in future years. And compaction testing in years 2-5 is where you see the difference. Mulching and cover in no till is key and often you have to till in year 1 to see a difference in those later years. I’d highly recommend having a consult with NRCS to have the test done correctly. “No till” is more than simply not tilling before planting. It’s an entire assembly of practices and results beyond what this singular tool and test can tell you. Many of those practices start before the day of mechanical preparation and planting.

Grazing wet soil is unavoidable, but also causes compaction. Nature only reverses via frost, shrink-swell or disturbance (e.g. tree throw, burrowing fauna). Creating a seedbed is a huge intervention. Thanks for sharing!

you would probably be better off deep ripping when it's dry to crack the soil open and get past the hard pan and then till the top and plant it. with sudan you might not have so many issues with weeds due to its fast growth and heavy cover. but tilling brings up the weed seeds.
