@leave_then_cleave: Everyone keeps talking about an “estrangement epidemic.” But what if we’re focusing on the symptom instead of the cause? Yes, families are becoming estranged. And yes, I believe that deserves our attention. But before we blame adult children, therapists, “boundary culture,” or an entire generation for giving up on family, shouldn’t we also be asking what happened BEFORE the estrangement? Were concerns dismissed for years? Could someone say, “That hurt me,” without being attacked? Was there accountability? Were boundaries respected? Was genuine repair ever possible? And no—this doesn’t mean every estranged parent is a narcissist. It doesn’t mean every estrangement is justified. And it certainly doesn’t mean therapy gets everything right. But estrangement is often the most visible part of the story—not necessarily the beginning of it. If we truly want to heal families, we have to become just as interested in what CAUSES estrangement as we are in condemning the estrangement itself. Because if estrangement is the fever, yelling at the thermometer isn’t going to make anyone well. Let’s dig deeper, folks. What do YOU think? Are we experiencing an estrangement epidemic—or are we finally seeing the consequences of unhealthy family dynamics that have existed for generations? #FamilyEstrangement #NarcissisticFamily #FamilyDynamics #Boundaries #Healing

You can’t talk about just the parents, many of the adult children are the narcissists or have BPD among so many other mental illnesses. Communication is lacking and they can’t handle their emotions

Exactly. Just went from low contact to no contact with my parents after explaining to exhaustion how their behavior affects me. I’ve written it so they can see the problem and have an opportunity to fix it. But they won’t. And that’s what they’ve chosen. I love my parents immensely. This is awful for me and I don’t want it to be this way. I think about it everyday. I still speak positively about them because they aren’t 100% toxic. But when they are toxic all of the good doesn’t matter because I’m still being poisoned.

I shocked myself by my own lucidity and brevity (haha) when I described my decision to my sister in the following way: “They’ve never been interested in me or cared about me. I’m just formalising the situation on my terms, instead of theirs.”

the older generation has been cutting off their kids this whole time if they're gay or have a mixed race relationship. when it happens to them, suddenly it's an epidemic.

True narcissist is rare. Everyone keeps trying to make everyone into a narcissist.

My mother went no/low contact with her family in the mid 80s. My elder siblings went no/low contact with her in the early 2000's. I went no contact with her in 2019. Dysfunctional families have always been around we are just more open to talk about it now.

In older generations, people moved away from their parents, joined the military or traveled and never moved back, or just pretty much disappeared if there was a problem. They are upset because there's a label to it now that points fault.

Patriarchy is a narcissistic pattern which all relations exist inside. We finally have vocabulary and support to see and make different decisions. The “silence to keep the peace” era is over. Age of EXPOSURE. 🖤

Boomer is a rebrand. Their parents originally called them the "Me" generation. How did their parents see it so far in advance and what made them like that?

They don’t like therapy because therapy is where accountability lies. So they blame therapists because of it

I walked away because of years of abuse! Schools wanted me to be in high achieving programs and guess who would not sign the form - my mother because I would be acknowledged as being very smart! She was jealous of me. A mother jealous of their child - that is sick!

America is a country of immigrants and pioneers. It was literally built out of people going no contact. If you’re American you shouldn’t feel guilty, it’s a tradition 😂

my mom tolerated abusive men, addiction, violence when I was a child because it was her life not mine (her words). when I became an adult and had kids and decided that would not be their life, I was the problem. everyone said I thought I was better than everyone, I was being stuck up. no, I just didn't think I had to have abuse in my life or the lives of my children. I still don't talk to most. of them anymore

I’ve seen multiple podcast this week of boomers calling in asking how to cut their children out of the exponential wealth that they’ve managed to stack up. One mother said one of her daughters struggles financially, but she’s also a lesbian so she wants to cut her out. I have put a significant amount of distance between myself and my own parents and the only question I ask myself is why didn’t I do it sooner? That boomer generation is a nasty bunch.

What I’ve been hearing and seeing from this generation of parents and older family members is INSANITY. They are mostly actively and/or passively abusive.
