Sometimes it’s not the parents, not wanting to help, it’s that they can’t help… everyone pushes college, but not everyone can afford it… let’s start pushing Trade Schools…

Community college + a scholarship is how I did it. My dad somehow made too much money for financial aid, but also obviously couldn’t afford to put us through college, so it was the only option

I worked hard and got scholarships that covered my tuition and worked full time to pay my rent and living expenses. Graduated with zero student loans

Unfortunately this is why I think financial aid shouldn’t solely be based on your parents income because I got denied all grants and financial aid and my dad has terrible credit to take out any loans so i had to drop a week before school starts. Bless you and i’m jelly of your son! lol

Honestly, not dropping out would not be an option for me if I am paying for college for my future kids. It would be not dropping out, maintaining at least a 3.7 GPA, and internships in the summer/participating in research. Then pay for school. Just going to class and barely passing is not enough. Any awards and scholarships goes on your resume and adds so so much.

I worked FULL TIME. Like multiple jobs. I am also SOO far in debt for school now. I still have another year of graduate school left. I was a first gen, non traditional transfer student. I couldn’t get like any help. It was fafsa and loans

I respectfully disagree… sometimes dropping out is the healthiest and cheapest option!

26 now and have paid out of pocket a few classes at a time over years. It’s frustrating. I would get more help if I stopped working.

parents who are now well off don’t believe they need to help their kids with school bc their parents “didn’t help them” so they think they owe us that like it’s a favor and a lesson that needs to be taught… if i have kids and i’m able i will be paying for their school.

my parents helped me get a student loan cause they made to much also but the loan was mainly in my name and they paid the interest while I was in school then when I graduated it was up to me to pay the loan off. just an idea for you.

Hope Grant and mine is living at home going to a technical college. We did have about 400+ in fees that hope didn’t cover but that is doable for me.

Kids do NOT need to love at school. Online classes and community college for first two years. Can be done with part time jobs.

I have 3 kids in college right now and thank goodness we put some money away all these years because we are supposed to be paying 35k/year per kid for state school!!! community college doesn't work because our kids already took all the basics in high school with dual credit and AP courses. I don't know how kids do it alone!

My rents didn’t help me. I got like 10k a semester and my classes were 5k a semester so I had 5k to live on. Rent was $420 a month, books maybe $500, so I had like $200 left to eat, and pay for anything else. I ate ramen 1/2 pack per day. $0.10 a pack.

I did get 40% academic scholarships. Went to a state school in town so I could live at home and commute. I worked part time making $10/hr ish. My degree cost roughly $30K. Parents paid for books and gas. I was allowed to eat groceries that were at the house. I saved up $10k on my own before going. Bought a $9.5K car cash in the middle of going to school. Graduated with $4k in a student loan I paid off quick.

It’s pretty simple. Everyone is going into debt, and honestly majority of these ppl aren’t getting degrees that will make enough money to pay off these loans in the long run. It’s a scam, and I don’t use that phrase lightly.
