The network is becoming part of the computer. For years, the AI infrastructure race was largely framed around one question: Who can build the most powerful processor? But as AI clusters grow from thousands toward tens of thousands — and potentially far beyond — making each individual GPU faster is no longer enough. Those GPUs have to communicate. Memory has to feed them. Data has to move across processors, switches, racks and increasingly enormous AI factories. And eventually, the ability to move information becomes just as important as the ability to compute it. That is why NVIDIA’s move into Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics matters. A million extraordinarily powerful GPUs that cannot communicate efficiently do not really form a million-GPU AI system. They are simply a very expensive collection of chips. At sufficient scale: The network becomes part of the computer. And SK hynix’s recent CPO roadmap pushes this idea even further. We normally think of SK hynix as a memory company: HBM. DRAM. Memory. But its longer-term vision asks a much more fundamental question: What if optical connectivity eventually reaches the memory interface itself? Instead of thinking about processors, memory and networking as increasingly powerful but relatively separate components, researchers describe an optics-centric architecture in which photonic interconnects could connect pools of compute with pools of memory. That could eventually change not simply how fast an AI system computes — but how the system itself is organized. And I think that distinction matters. The next phase of AI infrastructure may not be won simply by producing: the fastest GPU, the fastest memory, or the fastest network. Increasingly, the challenge is making all of them operate efficiently as one system. This is also why CPO is more interesting than simply “another faster optical technology.” It is part of a broader architectural response to a problem created by AI’s own success: Compute is becoming so powerful that moving data around the compute is becoming a bottleneck. And when the bottleneck changes, architecture can change with it. Perhaps that is the larger transition we are beginning to see: From optimizing components → to optimizing systems. From faster chips → to better architectures. From computing intelligence → to efficiently connecting intelligence at scale.
