No one knew something this small could change the atmosphere inside a maximum-security prison. 🐾 According to a firsthand account by incarcerated writer David McQuaid, the cat program at Indiana State Prison in Michigan City began nearly 20 years ago, when men working maintenance in tunnels beneath the prison discovered a mother cat who had died, leaving behind newborn kittens whose eyes had not yet opened. The men were allowed to bring the kittens inside and bottle-feed them. The kittens survived. More men wanted to participate. Morale grew. Eventually, a larger cat program developed. But the psychology may be the most remarkable part. McQuaid writes about how caring for a cat affects his anxiety, gives him another life that depends on him, and even gives him a reason to control his own reactions. His account describes something psychologists have long been interested in: what responsibility, attachment and caregiving can bring out in people.
