@thatguyshane216: The origin of those wonderfully stupid pieces of Canadian internet folklore that sounds like it should have a 200-year history, but actually came from one very strange man having an extremely strange day. The phrase “Waterloo, where the vampires hang out” originated with Steve Spiros, a Toronto man who was interviewed on the street around 2012. During a long, chaotic rant, Spiros talked about being treated like a vampire in Waterloo, made a cross gesture with his fingers, and eventually announced: “I’m going back to Waterloo where the vampires hang out.” The video became a Canadian viral clip and the line escaped into the cultural bloodstream, because apparently humanity has decided this is the sort of information worth preserving. So why Waterloo? There doesn’t appear to be any original folklore establishing Waterloo as a vampire hotspot. Spiros simply said it during his rant. His explanation was essentially that people in Waterloo treated him strangely and made cross gestures at him, which he interpreted through his own vampire/religious associations. The original rant is extremely difficult to follow, because it contains subjects ranging from the Pope to sunglasses to the NHL to being a “nobody” who therefore cannot be killed. There was also The Masquerade LARP scene around the University of Waterloo, and Waterloo residents have pointed to that as a possible contributing coincidence. But the evidence for that being the source of the famous phrase is much weaker. The viral-video explanation is the established origin. And then, in 2023, the joke achieved its final form of Canadian immortality when the movie BlackBerry had Glenn Howerton’s Jim Balsillie shout: “I’m from Waterloo, where the vampires hang out!” That was deliberately referencing the old viral video, rather than suggesting that BlackBerry’s executives were secretly running a blood bank beneath the RIM headquarters. #moviequotes #blackberry #fyp #movietok #movieclips
