One key controlled the entire system. Inside a wooden box behind the door were four sliding bolts. Two moved side to side, while two moved vertically. Each bolt had teeth on its inner end. At the center sat a toothed gear that engaged all four bolts together. When the key turned, it rotated the gear. That single motion drove one bolt upward, one downward, and the other two left and right. So instead of locking a door at just one point, Al-Jazari’s mechanism locked it from four sides with one turn. When the key was removed, the mechanism stopped in place, keeping the bolts secured.
