@smalltownmovietheater: 🕊️ Kes (1969) Some films make you cry because something terrible happens. Kes hurts because, for a little while, something beautiful happens to someone who desperately needs it. Billy Casper is a lonely working-class boy growing up in a harsh Yorkshire mining town. At home, he is neglected. At school, he is humiliated. Almost everywhere he goes, someone is telling him—directly or indirectly—that he isn’t worth very much. Then he finds a kestrel. He names her Kes. Training that bird becomes the one place where Billy is patient, confident and completely alive. Watch his face when he talks about Kes and you suddenly see a different child—not the “difficult boy” everyone thinks they know, but an intelligent, sensitive young person who has finally discovered something that belongs to him. Director Ken Loach never sentimentalizes Billy’s life, and young David Bradley’s performance feels almost painfully real. That’s why Kes stays with you. Sometimes a child doesn’t need someone to change his entire world. Sometimes he just needs one person—or even one small bird—to show him that there is another world inside him. And that he matters. #Kes #KenLoach #BritishCinema #ClassicCinema #FilmLovers
