@the_control_code: #stitch with @Savanna Stone Patriarchal beliefs undercut a woman’s ability to challenge abuse as published in the evangelicals’ own journal. This is my two cents and you can take it with how ever much weight you assign to it. I agree with everything you said except for one small detail. Control is abuse. It’s on the DV wheel. The only reason I make this distinction is because I grew up in a Baptist household. Although I wasn’t religious as an adult, I carried a patriarchal structure into the first half of my marriage and it’s harmful. Even if you don’t believe you’re being controlled, women who live in a household that is run by a man is not typically a well cared for woman. She’s caring for the kids and him and now often working as well. And shouldering the domestic labor. And ofc the man is happy with that arrangement, he benefits from it. When the woman complains he won’t even listen because he’s the “head of the household”. I live in a rural area and most women and men work. Many of those women just give their money to their husband and he still “leads the family”, even if she’s the breadwinner. I’ve never seen that end well. Most times it ends with that woman being discarded and financially ruined. I feel the danger in not calling “control”, or a dynamic of a leader and a follower in a romantic relationship, abusive is that we’re modeling that dynamic as valid choice and normal type for the next generation. I know different strokes for different folks, and maybe 1 couple in 100 it works for in the long term, but what about the harm caused by the 99 couples it didn’t work for and the ideology they passed onto their children. So while I do understand “different strokes for different folks”, and I am not attempting to judge someone’s lifestyle choice, the stakes are too high not to call a life of servitude into question. Who is it benefiting? Who is it harming? We already know the answer.

my man was raised Christian and he genuinely does not fancy 'submissive' women. If I didnt have fire in me, he wouldnt have fallen in live with me 😂. he also liked the fact I pursued him 😂😂
12 years later the man is still obsessed.

I agree with you but I think God meant that for non-abusive men & before it says anything about submitting in the Bible it says a man has to love his wife as Christ loved the church. If you’re wife an abusive partner he’s gonna weaponize it against you, Just my take..most women don’t have a problem “submitting” to a man that makes her feel safe and secure.

A passage they like to use in harmful situations: turn the other cheek. Even after I left Christianity in my late 30s, the structure I was raised in left me completely blind to the emotional abuse in my marriage. It needed to escalate to the point of calling dv helplines before I could face reality

If you want to know how to treat men that expect this, ask them what they think should be done about their Muslim counterparts (or Christian counterparts, if he's a Muslim patriarch)

My greatest flex in life is that I was raised catholic, so we were wealthy enough to get a higher education. Now I’m agnostic, and am in a relationship with an amazing man who ensures that I am strong enough to never need him and who knows I’m with him because I choose to be every day and can choose to not be at any moment. Religion exists to keep people controlled.

I am sure they would argue biblical men NEVER abuse anyone and if they do it's the woman's fault.

You do realize that Savanna was speaking to Christian’s right? She’s speaking with the presupposition that the viewer will understand if they are Christian. Don’t shut her down. And you’re not even going through the effort of reading the Bible for yourself to testify for yourself if that’s what Christianity actually pushes. Why not read on the topic from a Christian perspective and not just an atheists? Since you mentioned books studying the so called patriarchal belief structure. The Bible ain’t patriarchal, darling.
