This is a top-tier geopolitics + Balkan humor meme. It sums up 1000 years of Greek trauma in one WhatsApp screenshot. *The Title: Greece's WhatsApp be like: > 1 enemy who lives rent free in your head > 1 friend who is your orthodox brother > 1 debt collector called EU > and 570 years of trauma from 1453. > > #greece #balkans #turkey #cyprus #geography " width="135" height="240">
This is a top-tier geopolitics + Balkan humor meme. It sums up 1000 years of Greek trauma in one WhatsApp screenshot. *The Title: "What if Greece had WhatsApp 😂😂😂"* The right side shows the map of the *Megali Idea* - Greater Greece. The dream of every Greek nationalist to take back all of Anatolia, Constantinople, Cyprus. That's the Greece they WANT. The left side shows the chats Greece ACTUALLY has. Let's break down each one: *1. Cyprus (indentity crisis) - "I think I'm schizophrenic"* The Greek flag and Turkish flag split. This is perfect. Northern Cyprus is occupied by Turkey since 1974, Southern Cyprus is Greek. The island is literally split in half, two identities, two countries on one island. Pure identity crisis. *2. N. Macedonia - "fucking KILL YOURSELF"* This is the most famous Balkan beef. For 30 years, Greece blocked North Macedonia from entering EU/NATO because Greece said "Macedonia is a Greek name" - Alexander the Great was Greek. They were so angry they forced them to add "North" to their name. Greeks still hate it. So that message is accurate. *3. Turkey - "On May of 1453, the Byzantine capital of Constantinople fell to the ott..."* The ultimate Greek trauma. The Ottomans (Turkey) conquered Constantinople in 1453 and ended the Byzantine Empire. Modern Turks LOVE to remind Greeks of this date every year on May 29th. Greeks are still not over it 600 years later. It's like Turkey's favorite text to Greece. *4. EU - "WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU WANT 180 BILLION MO..."* The 2010-2015 Greek Debt Crisis. Greece went bankrupt and had to beg the EU (mainly Germany) for 180+ billion euro bailouts. The EU was furious, forced brutal austerity. That message is the EU's reaction every time Greece asks for money. *5. Serbia - "Hello, my orthodox brother, may Jesus Christ bless your soul 🙏"* The only wholesome chat. Greece and Serbia are both Orthodox Christian, both hate Turkey/Ottomans, both have been brothers for centuries. Serbia is the only friend Greece has in the Balkans. *6. Agent Erdoganopoulos - "The Turks don't suspect a thing, soon Byzantium will get it's revenge."* The best one. Greek conspiracy theory that Turkish President Erdogan is actually secretly Greek. His ancestors were from Pontic Greeks, his name sounds Greek (-opoulos is a Greek surname ending). So Greeks joke that he's a sleeper agent who will give Constantinople back to Greece. *Overall Punchline:* Greece is surrounded by enemies, has one friend, is broke, is obsessed with Turkey, and dreams of an empire that fell 600 years ago. That one screenshot explains all of modern Greek foreign policy.
