Thinking of painting your uPVC? Save this for when you're ready to tackle it! Painting uPVC really isn't as daunting as people make it out to be. Whether it's your front door, windows or garage door, most of the hard work is in the prep. Get that right and you'll give yourself the best chance of a finish that lasts. Here's how I'd go about it... 🧽 Start with a really good clean. Even if your door looks clean, it'll almost always have a build-up of grease, traffic film or general grime that can affect adhesion. I always reach for Zinsser Universal Degreaser & Cleaner because it leaves you with a spotless surface ready for painting. 🪵 Then give it a light scuff. I promise you don't need to spend hours sanding! You're not trying to remove the finish, you're just giving the paint something to grip to. Rodo Flexible De-Nib Pads are ideal because they flex around all the mouldings and panels without much effort. 🎨 Once you've finished sanding, clean up and mask everything. Wipe away all the dust before you start painting, then take a few extra minutes to protect the glass and hardware. It might feel like a faff, but you'll thank yourself later. I usually use CoverMasq Tape & Drape because it makes masking windows really quick and gives lovely clean edges. 🪣 Next comes the primer. Lots of modern paints are self-priming, but if you're after the best possible adhesion or you're painting a particularly shiny surface, I'd still recommend using one. Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 is a brilliant all-rounder and gives your topcoat the best possible base. 🖌 Finally, it's time to paint. My go-to would be Zinsser AllCoat or Sadolin Superdec. Both are designed for multi-surface projects like uPVC and are made to stand up to the British weather. Just remember, two thin coats will almost always give you a better finish than trying to get it all covered in one. Honestly, painting your uPVC is one of those jobs that can completely transform the front of your home without the cost of replacing it. Just don't rush the prep! Have you ever painted uPVC before, or is it still on your DIY list? Let me know below. 👇
