Gotta be bear spray. Like 90% sure cause it is so powerful and drifts through the air! It’s literally meant to protect you if a bear charges at you so I think you guys were caught in the drift path.

It sounds like it could have been thunderstorm asthma if it was so wide spread and effecting everyone in the campground. It occurs when specific storm conditions break large pollen grains or mold spores into tiny microscopic pieces. Winds can then spread these tiny pieces, and when people breathe them in it causes sudden wheezing, coughing, and severe trouble breathing.

This happened to everyone in a department store I was in when a lady dropped her pepper spray in the dressing room. They had to shut down the entire store. I bet it was someone’s bear spray

My first thought was someone burning plastic or bad wood in their fire. Ive had camp neighbors burn bad wood that was coated in something that caused a caustic reaction to everyone who can smell it.

Either bear spray or someone burned something in a fire that they shouldn’t have. I have seen that happen before but it was usually just some sort of plastic. We don’t get many bears were we grew up camping, so we don’t use bear spray in general. (Ontario). I think I saw one once in the distance on the property of the campground way in the back and I turned around and went back to the campground. And yes, we all knew there was a bear on the property already and knew to be aware of it. My dad had seen it when he was biking back there too. It liked to come closer to the campground in August/September when the plums were ripe on the bushes just outside of the campground. (Yellow plums. So damn good fresh from the bush! And yes, our trailer was hooked up to a septic system, no need to pump anything out! 🤣🤣)
