As a spouse you should know how to run the entire house on your own AND be capable of doing that. BOTH spouses. Because it WILL be 100/0 effort. We don’t know how long, or how often, but it WILL be 100/0 and YOU need to be able to take it all on. That’s loving your partner. That’s being a spouse.

I’ll never forget caring for a terminally ill 34 year old woman with pancreatic cancer at the hospital I used to work at. Her best friend camped out in her room for days, very involved in her care. Knew everything about her condition, her meds, her symptoms, what made her feel better etc. There was a moment when the patients husband was on the phone and I could hear him yelling at the patient. He was angry that the water and electricity were shut off because she didn’t make the payments. And was shocked at how high the bill was. She said “I know nothing about the charges babe— I’ve been living in hospice for months. I explained to you what the bills were and what accounts they come out of. You’re going to have to handle it. I’m DYING.” That was such a sobering thing for me to hear just as a bystander. Even while dying she still had to hold his hand through adulting while being yelled at.

I used to work in a rehab hospital. A young husband took his young wife out on a motorcycle for a ride. He started swerving between the cars and wrecked. Both were thrown from the bike. He ended up with a few scratches. She ended up with a broken body and a brain injury. After being in the hospital for 4 weeks, he came in and delivered her divorce papers.He couldn't "handle the stress" of caring for her for the rest of her life. 😭
