A recurring issue that we are seeing in these cats is severe periodontal disease. While Phoenix's thin body condition may be a direct result of her painful mouth, her current comfort and future quality of life are dependent on speedy extractions. When given the choice, Phoenix would choose snacks over humans any time. We think that Phoenix may feel more comfortable in the presence of other cats, but she's not completely opposed to sharing space with people. Phoenix can be coaxed into interaction with a churu, but she becomes an acrobat when a human hand tries to pet her. Even so, reactive behaviors like posturing, and hissing, airplane ears are not her style, and Phoenix would rather receive affection through words and actions than through snugs and petting. Phoenix initially suffered from an infestation of ear mites, but she has since been treated. But the teeth in her mouth are in various stages of decay, and despite some of them being loose, require surgical extraction to ensure a complete removal. Behavior "Opened kennel door, Phoenix was in the back of kennel- tense body, wide eyes, head low. Slowly reached my hand out, she lowered/flinched away, did not approach to sniff/engage. No hissing/growling or defensive body language, very fearful/avoidant and flighty. Slowly reached out and pet head with popsicle stick- Phoenix flattened to floor/ducked away, transitioned to petting with hand. Tolerant but did not enjoy petting. High FAS and low sociability, no aggression from Phoenix even when pushing the interaction."
