I expect you to be on your best behavior, alright?” Lisa’s father says, as if she weren’t already the most responsible person he knows. “Okay, Papa.” Lisa nods. She’s actually excited — finally, a new woman around to be friends with. Women are usually jealous of her, and men… well, men tend to like her a little too much. JENNIE POV “Father, do I really have to go? There’s no internet there, and I won’t be able to see my friends anymore.” Jennie rolls her eyes, still holding onto the faint hope that he’ll change his mind — even though the car is already waiting outside. “Won’t you miss me, Father?” She pouts, her go-to move whenever she doesn’t get her way. Mr. Kim clicks his tongue. “Jennie, that won’t work on me. You have to go. You need to learn.” His tone leaves no room for argument — his decision is final. ARRIVAL By the time Jennie arrives, it’s already dark and quiet. As soon as she steps out of the car, her assistant speaks. “Ms. Jennie, this is your father’s cabin. This is where you’ll be staying. Please get some rest.” Jennie thanks her assistant politely and heads inside. She tosses and turns, unable to sleep. She already misses the city. She can’t wait for this punishment to be over. THE NEXT DAY When she finally wakes up, it’s already afternoon — classic city girl sleep schedule. She groans and sits up in bed. Jennie decides to explore her father’s farm. She throws on a simple pair of flare pants and boots and heads out. The moment she steps outside, she sees a woman feeding carrots to the horses. Jennie swears she’s straight — so why the hell is her face getting warm? The woman looks up and smiles. I’m staying here forever, Jennie thinks to herself. “Hi, I’m Lalisa — but you can call me Lisa.” The woman offers her hand. “You must be Ms. Jennie?” Jennie stares at her, already forgetting this was supposed to be a punishment. She takes Lisa’s hand. “Hey — I… uh… yeah, that’s me.” Jennie stammers. It’s just a simple question, she thinks, annoyed at herself. Why the hell am I stuttering? NEXT PART Lisa tilts her head a little, that soft, easy smile still on her face. “You okay? You look a little flushed. It’s warmer out here than it looks.” Jennie fumbles for a second, brushing a stray strand of hair behind her ear like it’s the most casual thing in the world. “Yeah — yeah, it’s just… the drive. And the heat. I’m fine.” Smooth, she thinks. Real smooth. Lisa chuckles, and the sound is low and warm, like it fits right in with the quiet around them. “Well, welcome to the farm. If you need anything — water, a tour, someone to show you which horses bite and which ones don’t — just holler. I’m around most days.” “Right. Horses.” Jennie nods way too enthusiastically. “I… I like horses. Never really been close to one, but I’m sure they’re… great.” Lisa’s eyes light up. “You’ve never been around horses? Oh, we have to fix that. Maybe tomorrow morning? I can take you out — slow, easy ride. Nothing scary, I promise.” For half a second, Jennie almost says yes. Almost. Then she remembers who she is — the Jennie Kim, queen of the city, used to saying no to everything that isn’t VIP or front row. But the word dies in her throat before it can even come out. “I’ll think about it,” she says instead, keeping her voice as cool as she can manage. “I’m still… adjusting to the time difference.
