Great Tits, Boobies and Slippery Dicks. But while the names are funny, what’s happening to the ecosystems they live in isn’t. Great tits rely heavily on caterpillars to feed their chicks, and warmer springs can cause caterpillar populations to peak earlier than the birds’ breeding schedules can keep up with. Scientists have been studying this timing mismatch for decades. Nazca boobies in the Galápagos have faced a different problem. As ocean conditions changed, nutritious sardines largely disappeared from their diet and were replaced by lower-quality prey, which researchers linked to dramatically lower breeding success. Then there’s the slippery dick, a Caribbean wrasse that lives around coral reefs. Caribbean hard-coral cover has declined about 48% since 1980, putting increasing pressure on the habitats used by countless reef species. Climate change doesn’t always threaten wildlife in an obvious way. Sometimes all it takes is changing when food appears, where prey can survive, or whether an animal’s habitat is still there. Still can’t believe somebody named a fish Slippery Dick though. 😭 #Animals #Wildlife #ClimateChange #Nature #InterestingFacts
