In a world where too many people love the views more than they actually love Kung Fu, the real ones are easy to recognize: consistency doesn’t lie. Nowadays, I see teachers pretending to be Shaolin monks when they’re not, and tourists pretending to be warriors without even learning the basic rules of respect. Temples, traditions and a culture that people have dedicated their lives to are becoming backgrounds for viral content. And yes, I think teachers have a responsibility too. Allowing completely unprepared tourists with zero conditioning to perform Iron Body demonstrations, screaming and crying while millions of people watch and believe this is Kung Fu, doesn’t promote the art. It makes a beautiful practice look ridiculous. The same goes for allowing people to enter sacred places dressed or behaving in ways that show no respect for where they are, just because the content might get views. To the teachers: if you need to pretend to be a Shaolin monk to attract students, maybe you should do another job… And to the wannabe “Kung Fu influencers”: if your only way to create a viral video is to copy another creator’s ideas, music, shots and editing, you’re not influencing. You’re following. And one last reminder to everyone turning Shaolin into internet entertainment: Breaking sticks is a trend right now. Trends die the moment the internet finds something new. So be very careful what you’re building while the attention is here. Because when the tourists move on to the next trend, the people who genuinely love Kung Fu will still be here training, but not in your school. #kungfu #shaolin #consistency
