Feelings are not facts, they are chemical events in your brain. That's the second commandment of self-brain surgery. And it's a game-changer for your life. Feelings come on quickly, with a rush of physiological signals like racing heartbeat, quick and breath, and the hair on the back of your neck standing up. This is your brain's attempt to make sense of your environment, or out of something you're just thinking about, remembering, or worried about. Your brain doesn't know the difference between something that's actively happening and something you're just imagining. Think about it: when you feel something like a racing pulse, what makes it anxiety versus anticipation? What makes it fear instead of excitement? The answer is that we tell ourselves a story about the meaning behind how we feel. And then the more we focus on that story from the same perspective, the more automatically our brain associates future times when we feel the same physiological events with the same story. But it's not a fact until it's true. And neuroscience research teaches us that an alarming percentage of the automatic thoughts and feelings we have are not true. If you can develop a system of pausing for a moment to give the slower but much more analytical parts of your brain to come online, they will help you interpret what you're feeling and tell yourself a truer story about what's really going on. The Bible calls this "taking every thought captive," II Corinthians 10:5. This one move will make a bigger difference in your quality of life than just about anything else you can do. We call that self-brain surgery, and I teach you how to do it in my New York Times best selling new book. Check the link in my bio to learn more. Follow me to learn more ways to connect neuroscience in scripture to help you flourish in your life every day. Save this for the next time you need to tell yourself a better story about what you feel, and share this with a friend who needs to know that feelings are not facts.
