Life in the 90s and early 2000s was slower, more physical, and way more present. Communication meant effort. You had a house phone with a cord, and if someone was on the internet, the phone didn't work. You made plans ahead of time because you couldn't text "I'm 5 mins away." If you weren't home, people just had to wait or leave a message on the answering machine. Caller ID was a luxury. The internet was a place you VISITED, not lived in. Dial-up made that horrible screeching sound, took a minute to connect, and was slow as hell. You went to Encarta or Ask Jeeves for homework. No Google Maps — you printed directions from MapQuest and if you got lost, you actually got lost. YouTube didn't exist until 2005, so you waited for your favorite music video to come on MTV or TRL. Entertainment was an event. You watched what was on TV when it was on, or you taped it on VHS. If you missed it, you missed it. Friday night meant going to Blockbuster to rent a movie or a game. Music was on burned CDs, mixtapes, or your iPod with the click wheel that held like 1,000 songs and felt like magic. You listened to the whole album because you couldn't just skip to the hits. Social life was in person. You knocked on your friends' doors. You memorized phone numbers. Your photos lived in disposable cameras — you took 27 shots and had no idea if they were good until you developed them at CVS a week later. AIM away messages and MySpace Top 8 were as close as social media got. Limited tech meant more boredom, but boredom made you more creative. You went outside until the streetlights came on. #80s #90s #2000s #nostalgia #goodtimes
