Because Catholics are not saying, “This bone is God.” They believe the relic belonged to a person who lived for God, and therefore it has a special connection to that person and to what God did through their life. Think about a family photograph. You might kiss or keep a photograph of someone you love. You aren't worshipping the photograph—you are honouring the person it reminds you of. Catholics make a similar distinction with relics. And there are biblical examples of respect for the remains of holy people. Joseph asked that his bones be carried with the Israelites, and Moses fulfilled that request (Genesis 50:25; Exodus 13:19).
